Argentina in Transition
ARGENTINA IN TRANSITION
Lorenzo Lazzati
In the 2023 general elections, Javier Milei won a sweeping victory across Argentina. An ultraliberal economist who defines himself as an anarcho-capitalist, Milei proposed drastic economic reforms, including the dollarization of the economy, the closure of the central bank, and deep cuts to public spending.
His rise was fueled by widespread frustration with both Peronist governments and center-right alternatives. After years of economic stagnation, inflation had reached 138%, and the poverty rate had climbed to over 40%.
This project documents Buenos Aires during the days surrounding Javier Milei’s inauguration as president. Capturing moments from the inauguration, scenes of everyday life, and political protests, it offers a portrait of a society navigating deep social divides, economic hardship, and the uncertainties of a new political era.
